Music News for this week......

YouTube is presenting YouTube Music and YouTube Premium.  Also, you can check out why you should hear Laurel and not Yanny (is that even a word?) Shoutout to percussionist Yoel Del Sol as well. Sony buys EMI publishing

Damon is in L.A. playing with Brassroots District, a band started by friend of the show Ari Herstand. You can hear his interview on episode 14 with Fausto Cuevas. You can also read his blog, Ari's Take or even pick up his book, How to Make it in the New Music Business

Henry will be launching a new website in June. As a teaser, you can hear the song leading into his interview titled, El Diablo written by Ray Barretto, arranged by Henry, performed by his group Villa Locura.

Henry recorded this album at the legendary Electric Lady Studios. The guy who mixed the album is Michael Brauer, and Joe LaPorta mastered it. When it is released publicly, you can hear it HERE

Download "El Diablo" from https://villalocura.com/merch/ **VILLA LOCURA & ZAPATERO FILMS PRESENTS: "EL DIABLO" - BEHIND THE SCENES OFFICIAL VIDEO.** The new song, like a lost Latin track off Maggot Brain, embraces Cole's vision for 21st-century Puerto Rican music, encompassing a wide range of global influences from folkloric rhythms to jazz, rock, and funk.

The trailer for the documentary "If We Are Related, We Shall Meet", can be seen here.....

"If We Are Related We Shall Meet" is a film about spiritual family ties. In it, Henry Cole & Villa Locura, a band deeply grounded in the African-descended rhythms of Puerto Rico, visits Havana, Cuba for the first time to give three performances at the Havana World Music Festival, the renowned cultural hotspot Fábrica del Arte Cubano, and finally an informal street performance in the Callejón de Hamel, Havana's landmark gathering place for rumberos.

Bomba and Plena are two styles of music native to Puerto Rico. Marcos brings up the band Henry played in called Orquesta La PVC that was a timba band inspired by: Klimax, Los Van Van, Charanga Habanera, & Isaac Delgado. Henry also credits Changuito and some of his songo vocabulary for inspiration as he was developing as a player.

Henry eventually went to the Manhattan School of Music and studied with John Riley. The two books John wrote that are referred to are "The Art of Bop Drumming" and "Beyond Bop Drumming". And these are the Gary Chafee books

Recorded live at Bogui Jazz Club , Madrid 2017 Miguel Zenon - Luis Perdomo - Hans Glawishnig

The track Henry mentions with some improvising on it for the Residente album is "La Sombra". The story of Rene and how he put together the Grammy award winning Residente album and documentary is an interesting one. You can learn more about that by clicking HERE

Here's a video of Henry playing "Identities are Changeable" with the Miguel Zenon Big Band....

Miguel Zenón possesses rare talent, both for the level of his alto saxophone virtuosity and the ability to make complex compositions immediate and accessible. But he's but one of many who moved to New York City to pursue jazz. And he's one of over one million New-York-area residents of Puerto Rican origin.

Three of Henry's biggest influences are percussion players Giovanni Hidalgo, Anthony Carrillo (Congas & Bongo) & Jose Luis "Changuito" Quintana (Timbales).

Henry uses Drum Workshop Drums (DW), Zildjian Cymbals, Vic Firth Sticks and Mallets, Latin Percussion (LP), & Aquarian Drum Heads.

In his book bag he has Jacques Delcluse Method for Snare Drum, Marco Minnemann's Extreme Interdependence, Joe Morello's Master Studies, Rick Mattingly's Creative Time Keeping for the Contemporary Jazz Drummer. Damon brings up the Gary Chester book, The New Breed, which was inspiration for Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez's book Conversations in Clave. He also brings up Mark Guiliana's book Exploring Your Creativity on Drumset. Henry also brings up Johnny Raab's Jungle Drum "n" Bass book as well.

The song leading out of the interview was "Soli" by Ben Wendell.
